Rhythm - Divided Attention
Small Group Guide
SUMMARY
This week's message challenged the assumption that closeness with God should happen spontaneously, arguing instead that consistent attention — not a feeling — is what nurtures a real relationship with him. Using Psalm 103 and Hebrews 13, the message showed that Scripture calls us to actively notice and respond to who God is and what he has done, rather than waiting to feel drawn to him. The challenge was to stop waiting for motivation and instead choose ongoing attention, trusting that engagement produces affection rather than the other way around.
Main Focus: Worship is an act that develops our feelings for God, not a feeling for God that we express through worship.
ICE-BREAKER
Kick It Off With Something Fun: Think of something you weren't that interested in until you actually tried it — a hobby, a show, a food, a sport. What changed once you actually gave it your attention?
TAKE IT DEEPER
- The message said, "Reading produces the interest, not the other way around." Where in your life have you experienced that — where doing something first is what created your interest in it, rather than interest coming first?
- Read Psalm 103:1-5. David calls his own soul to praise and to "forget not all his benefits." What has God done in your life that you've stopped noticing because you've heard it or experienced it so many times?
- "Unchecked familiarity allows me to participate without giving deliberate attention." Where do you see this showing up in your own faith — a habit, a prayer, a passage of Scripture you move through without really noticing anymore?
- Read Hebrews 13:15-16. The passage describes praise as something we "continually offer" through Jesus. What would it look like this week to offer God your attention even when you don't particularly feel like it?
- Eugene Peterson said, "We can act ourselves into a new way of feeling much quicker than we can feel ourselves into a new way of acting." Do you agree or disagree? What's one small, deliberate act of attention toward God you could commit to this week — Notice, Attention, Response?
- "Spontaneity is associated with authenticity" was named as a common but harmful assumption — the idea that if you really cared, you'd naturally feel drawn to something. Where has that belief shaped how you think about your own faith, and how has it helped or hurt you?
- Read Psalm 103:13-14. It describes God's compassion for us "for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust." How does knowing God is compassionate toward your weakness change the pressure to "feel" your way into faith rather than simply showing up?
